Course Objectives

This teaching gives students the conceptual framework useful to investigate the relationship between geography and public policy, recalling the importance of participation and spatial justice in its pursuit. Through case studies related to the national and international context, the student acquires knowledge of the conceptual, regulatory and methodological frameworks related to participation and territorial governance, applied both to urbanity and to environment.

Course Prerequisites

None

Teaching Methods

The course is held through lectures, but with a specific attention to the interaction and the participation of students. For this reason, there will be interactive lessons with the participation of students. This method is supported by visual tools (power point presentations) and multimedia connections, in order to facilitate learning.

Assessment Methods

The exam is written and made by a written exam, with 3 open questions during 1h30, and it verifies the that students acquire concepts explained during lessons.The first two questions concern the program shared by all students, while the third is different depending on whether the students are attending or not attending.

In particular, the exam verifies the acquisition of:

- The knowledge of geographical theories and concepts explained during lessons;

- Students’ critical ability to give specific examples and to connect them;

- Students synthesis ability in a written form;

- Students capacity to precisely answer to questions as well as to give punctual answers.

The exam evaluation will be expressed on thirty points, communicated to students through their online career book; and students will have the possibility to accept it or not within three days from their on line publication.

Contents

The module proposes territorial governance as a process that requires the adoption of inclusive dynamics of the various social actors in territorial policies. Assuming the spatiality of the contemporary world as a constitutive element of social phenomena, the module provides the student with the interpretative tools to understand the social and political relevance of geography, as well as the importance of participatory methodologies that it proposes to bring out the identities of the various members of society. In particular, we provide knowledge on territoriality, spatial justice, participation and territorial governance, focusing on the role of participatory mapping in the conveyance of the territorial knowledge of inhabitants. The course offers insights related to both urban territories and environmental protection contexts on a national and international scale.
