Syllabus
Course Objectives
The course is divided into two parts:
The first part focuses on the evolution of Arabic poetry from the early twentieth century to poetic production in the twenty-first century.
The second part is devoted to the study of the various literary forms of the contemporary Arabic novel. Particular attention is paid to the interaction between text and socio-political context, and to the role of literature in expressing and anticipating political change, with reference to the major historical events affecting the Arab world during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In addition to an overview of the historical and cultural context, the major literary movements and their leading representatives, part of the course is devoted to the study and analysis of literary texts in Arabic and in translation.
By the end of the course, students will have:
1. acquired a detailed knowledge of a selection of literary texts in Arabic and in translation;
2. strengthened their linguistic and methodological skills through the reading, interpretation, and analysis of literary texts;
3. developed a thorough understanding of the historical and socio-political context of literary production in the contemporary period.

Course Prerequisites
To sit the Arabic Literature 1 examination, students must have successfully passed the Arabic Language 1 examination.
To sit the Arabic Literature 2 examination, students must have successfully passed the Arabic Language 2 examination.
To sit the Arabic Literature 2 examination, students must have successfully passed the Arabic Language 2 examination.
Teaching Methods
Weekly lectures, reading and analysis of literary texts in Arabic and translation, student presentations, and seminars with external experts.
Assessment Methods
To sit the examination, students must have successfully passed the Arabic Language examination of the previous academic year.
The examination consists of an oral exam divided into two parts. The first part assesses students' theoretical knowledge of the historical and cultural context, literary movements, and the authors covered during the course. The second part consists of the reading, translation, and analysis of one or more literary passages in Arabic selected from those studied in class. The two parts of the oral examination carry equal weight in the final assessment. The final grade will be based on students' knowledge of the required readings, all materials provided through the Moodle e-learning platform, and the presentation of the in-depth study.
For third-year students, the course includes an Arabic Literature seminar, the contents of which form part of the examination syllabus.
The final grade will be awarded according to the following assessment criteria:
- Excellent (30 with honours): Excellent knowledge of the course contents and an excellent ability to explain and contextualise them appropriately. Clear, accurate, and effective presentation, with an excellent command of the literary texts in Arabic.
- Very Good (30–27): Very good knowledge of the course contents and a very good ability to explain and contextualise them appropriately. Clear, accurate, and effective presentation, with a very good command of the literary texts in Arabic.
- Good (26–24): Good knowledge of the course contents, although primarily descriptive, with an acceptable ability to analyse and synthesise information. Good command of the literary texts in Arabic.
- Satisfactory/Pass (23–18): Appropriate, though not entirely comprehensive, knowledge of the course contents. Limited but sufficient ability to analyse the course contents and literary texts. Language is simple, with some errors in both Italian and Arabic.
- Fail (below 18): Partial and superficial knowledge of the course contents. The course contents and literary texts are analysed and contextualised in a superficial and confused manner. Fragmentary and unclear presentation, with serious errors in both Italian and Arabic.

- the major poetic movements of the twentieth century: Neoclassicism, Romanticism, the Mahjar movement, the Dīwān school, and the Apollo school;
- the poetic revolution of the 1950s and the Iraqi school: the contributions of Nāzik al-Malāʾika and Badr Shākir al-Sayyāb;
- prose poetry;
- the Palestinian school and the poetry of Maḥmūd Darwīsh;
- selected examples of twenty-first-century Arabic poetry.
Part II:
- the emergence and development of the Arabic novel from the twentieth century to the present, with particular attention to its major literary trends and subgenres;
- an optional student-led in-depth study, to be arranged with the instructor.

Non-attending and repeat students are required to contact the course instructor at least two months before the examination.
Third-year students who are unable to attend the Arabic Literature Seminar must contact the seminar instructor (Prof. Arianna Tondi) at least two months before the examination.
Students who are unable to deliver the in-depth presentation are required to complete an individual in-depth study, to be agreed with the course instructor at least one month before the examination date.
