Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to expand the language skills acquired in the Lingua Cinese II – Linguistica e Traduzione course through the consolidation and deepening of grammatical structures and the expansion of vocabulary, and to develop translation competence through the translation of authentic texts from Chinese into Italian and the discussion of translation strategies. From a linguistic point of view, achieving the expected level will enable students to interact in conversations on concrete and abstract topics with reasonable fluency, to understand authentic texts of intermediate difficulty, to summarise their main points in Chinese, and to translate them into Italian.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the Chinese language corresponding to the language skills acquired in the Lingua Cinese II – Linguistica e Traduzione course. Students are expected to have mastered the basic grammatical structures and to be able to read and write the characters required at this level. Students enrolled in the Degree Programme in Modern Languages and Literatures must pass the Lingua Cinese II – Linguistica e Traduzione exam before sitting this exam.

Teaching Methods

The course consists of lectures based on the primary course materials (reading of texts, practice exercises) and on the active participation of students through the translation of the assigned texts, accompanied by discussion of their contents, linguistic features and translation strategies. Regular attendance is strongly recommended.

Assessment Methods

In order to sit this exam, students must have passed the AAL exam. For the contents of the AAL, as well as the format and schedule of the related assessment tests, please refer to the CLA website. The assessment for this exam consists of two parts. Access to the second part is only possible after passing the first.
First part: written test. Duration: 120 minutes. The written test is marked out of 15 points (9 points is the minimum threshold to pass). Contents:

completing sentences by filling in the blanks with given words;
reconstructing sentences using given words;
theoretical questions on the syntactic and lexical structures introduced during the lessons.

Second part: oral exam. Duration: 30 minutes. The oral exam is marked out of 15 points. Contents:

reading and translation (without a dictionary) from Chinese into Italian of short passages taken from the texts read in class, and identification of the syntactic function of certain sentence elements.

The final grade will be published on the student's web page and will be calculated as the average between, on the one hand, the marks obtained in the two tests described above and, on the other, the mark obtained in the AAL test. More detailed information on the tests will be published on the Lingua Cinese III – Linguistica e Traduzione course page (Moodle) before the exam sessions. Non-attending students are advised to schedule an office hours appointment while preparing for the exam.
Grading scale (out of thirty):

Excellent (30 cum laude) – Knowledge and skills fully acquired and applied with precision, effectiveness and autonomy. No errors.
Very good (30–27) – Very solid knowledge and skills, applied correctly and confidently. Any errors are minor and non-recurring.
Good (26–24) – Adequate knowledge and skills, with some uncertainty or imprecision. Errors present but neither serious nor systematic.
Sufficient (23–18) – Basic knowledge and skills acquired, but applied partially or with evident errors. Overall comprehension sufficient.
Insufficient (below 18) – Incomplete knowledge and inadequately developed skills. Numerous errors that compromise the outcome of the task.
