Syllabus

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, students will have acquired the basic knowledge for analysing and understanding digital storytelling, seen as a set of elements concerning both the transformations of digital environments and the changing discourses that support the construction of online and offline narratives; they will know the mechanisms underlying the production and circulation of narratives in the space mediated by digital media; they will possess the basic analytical skills to study the social and cultural elements that can support, or impede, different forms of online storytelling.

Specific objectives: understanding the specific characteristics of different social media and transmedia dynamics; understanding the social and cultural dynamics that contribute to the construction of online narratives; developing critical and reflective skills with respect to forms of online discourse construction.

Course Prerequisites

Basic sociological and/or anthropological knowledge.

Teaching Methods

Teaching includes lectures, seminar sessions with a focus on discussion and direct dialogue with the students, and in-class activities.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is based on a written exam with three open questions, to be answered in 1h. The objective of the examination is to verify the knowledge acquired by the student, their understanding of the basic concepts and tools developed in the examination texts, use of correct terminology, and coherent and clear structuring of discourse. The assessment criteria include: completeness and relevance, clarity of

argumentation, language skills and correct use of terminology, ability to synthesize and re-elaborate the questions, grammatical and syntactic correctness, and richness of exposition.

Each answer is graded on a scale of 1 to 30. The final grade is given by averaging the grade obtained in the three questions.

Contents

Based on selected research, the course lectures will be devoted to the critical study of different social media and their characteristics and affordances. Furthermore, the course will be dedicated to understanding digital storytelling by analysing both its technological and social dimensions. A critical look will be given at the role of digital narratives in producing or challenging certain worldviews. Particular attention will be given to the construction of the body through the mediation offered by digital media.
