Syllabus

Course Objectives

C1 (Effective Proficiency) level of competence in English.

Course Prerequisites

B2 (Vantage) level of competence in English.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, debates on the arguments presented in class, applied language activities, possible personalized student project (for attending students only).

Assessment Methods

The exam comprises a written test and an oral one. Students are allowed to take the oral test ONLY after passing the written test (pass/fail); the oral test should be taken in any case within 18 months after passing the written test.

Written test:
Advanced English test (on PC) - no dictionaries are allowed.
The test comprises various exercises:
1) Reading comprehension
2) Use of English
3) Listening comprehension

Oral test:
A discussion on the topics dealt with in the course, the books listed in the syllabus and the multimodal analysis carried out by attending students.
The grade will be based on 1) linguistic correctness, 2) clarity and coherence, and 3) competence as to the course content.

Contents

This course explores a wide variety of media and media content, spanning from traditional print and broadcast formats to contemporary digital platforms. It features practical examples using real-world data, such as newspaper articles, press releases, television programs, advertisements (across print, broadcast, and digital), blogs, social media posts, internet memes and culture jamming. The course also highlights the growing creativity of everyday individuals in media production and reception, while examining the emotional impact that different media forms can generate. Attending students will be encouraged to carry out a multimodal analysis during the course, using the mobile equipment of the Multimedia Language Lab. The educational goals are coherent with those of the Communication, Information and Publishing Degree Course – where the module is taught (with reference to AREA no. 10). They are also coherent with the L-LIN/12 sector, as they are focussed on the study of the English language at a C1 level ability (Effective Proficiency) of the Common European Framework.
