Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (23/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students are able to fully understand the opportunities offered by data and its interpretation in the context of the production, distribution, and analysis of audiovisual content consumption. Furthermore, they have developed a critical ability in dealing with data, recognizing their limitations, and the possible rhetorical distortions to which they may be subject by the industry itself.

Course Prerequisites

A preliminary understanding of the fundamentals of the functioning of the audiovisual industry is desirable but not strictly necessary.

Teaching Methods

The teaching is conducted through frontal lectures that alternate historical and theoretical insights with case study analyses. Participatory classroom discussion is encouraged.

Assessment Methods

The final course examination takes the form of an oral test, and the evaluation is expressed on a scale of thirty. The interview consists of three questions related to the course program in order to verify the understanding of the concepts discussed in the bibliographical texts, the ability to navigate the field covered by the course, and the critical application of the acquired tools.

The final exam takes the form of an oral interview and is graded on a scale of thirty. The interview consists of three questions related to the course content, aimed at assessing the student’s knowledge of the topics covered in the assigned readings, their ability to navigate the field addressed in the course, and their capacity to critically apply the analytical tools acquired.

For students who have "Creative Industries and Publishing Markets" in their study plan, the grade will be a weighted average with that of the "Audiovisual Publishing" module.

Contents

The course discusses the usefulness and limitations of a data-driven approach to the study of audiovisual content and explores the potential and challenges of "entertainment science." It retraces the history of such approaches within the field of cinema and audiovisual media studies and examines the resistances these methods have encountered over the decades, including internationally.
The possibilities offered by data analysis in the context of audiovisual content and consumption are investigated, both in the film and television contexts. The course then delves into the various uses of data within the audiovisual industry, including for the functioning of video-on-demand (VOD) streaming platforms.
Particular relevance is given to the discussion of data describing the regional characteristics of cinema and television consumption in Italy from the post-war period onwards, especially in the first twenty years of the new millennium, as the topic of consumption geographies sheds light on important aspects of the audiovisual industry and national culture.
