Course Objectives

The course provides tools to understand how the audiovisual value chain works, with a focus on editorial, production, and distribution logics across cinema, television, and video-on-demand platforms. It aims to develop a critical perspective on editorial practices, professional roles, and underlying economic models. By the end of the course, students will be able to analyze processes, functions, and strategies in audiovisual publishing with appropriate terminology and references.

Teaching Methods

The teaching is conducted through frontal lectures that alternate historical and theoretical insights with case study analyses. Participatory classroom discussion is encouraged.

Assessment Methods

The final course examination takes the form of an oral test, and the evaluation is expressed on a scale of thirty. The interview consists of two questions related to the course program in order to verify the understanding of the concepts discussed in the bibliographical texts, the ability to navigate the field covered by the course, and the critical application of the acquired tools.

The final exam takes the form of an oral interview and is graded on a scale of thirty. The interview consists of three questions related to the course content, aimed at assessing the student’s knowledge of the topics covered in the assigned readings, their ability to navigate the field addressed in the course, and their capacity to critically apply the analytical tools acquired.

For students who have "Creative Industries and Publishing Markets" in their study plan, the grade will be a weighted average with that of the "Data Cultures and Audiovisual Industries" module.

Contents

The course offers an in-depth exploration of the audiovisual industry, with particular focus on the production and editorial chain of cinema, television, and streaming platforms. Its aim is to provide an understanding of the general functioning of the system, analyzing its main components and the operational logics that govern the development, production, distribution, and scheduling of content.

The first part of the course will provide an overall framework of the audiovisual chain, focusing on the functions of the publisher, the processes of content selection and planning, and the organization of work across different production contexts. It will introduce the main editorial strategies adopted in audiovisual media and the role of the key professional figures involved.

The second part will examine the economic and organizational models of the audiovisual industry, with reference to both the film and television/digital sectors. Particular attention will be given to elements of the contemporary landscape. The course will draw on case studies and exemplary materials to foster a concrete and critical understanding of the sector.
