Course Objectives

The course will provide students with an essential knowledge of the main problems, major approaches, and methods of the philosophy of science. Of great importance will be the ability to discuss in a clear and rigorous manner.
At the end of the course, the student will: have a non-superficial knowledge of the problems, methods, and arguments characteristic of the philosophy of science; understand and critically analyze philosophical-scientific texts; and independently develop a philosophical analysis of the various problems covered in class.

Course Prerequisites

General knowledge of major scientific findings.

Teaching Methods

Lectures by the instructor, class discussions on texts and ideas, individual work.

Assessment Methods

Oral examination with questions on the topics covered in the course. These questions will be aimed at determining the degree to which the student has met the formative objectives (content knowledge, critical analysis of texts, independence of thought). The grade will reflect the achievement of the formative objectives as follows:
-sufficient (18-23/30), fair (24-26/30), good(27-28/30), excellent (29- 30/30).

Contents

We will analyze some of the central questions riuardo the nature of scientific practice and theory. What makes a discipline a science? Is science capable of discovering objective truth about the world? How and why do scientific theories change over time? To what extent do observations and experiments determine which theories are accepted? What does a good scientific explanation consist of? What are the laws of nature? Does physics possess a special place compared to other scientific disciplines? What is the relationship between the study of the physical world and the study of our brain? What is the relationship between physics and the mind sciences? Are their methodologies different, and if so, how? Do these disciplines say different things about the world?
