Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to identify the themes and issues in the history of political and social institutions that form the basis for understanding European political processes from the modern era to the contemporary era. It attempts to provide a historical overview of the construction of the welfare state, starting from old regime assistance, moving through the nineteenth century and the reforms at the origins of the Italian welfare state placed in the early twentieth-century European context, up to Fascism. The course will then analyze the welfare institutions and social policies of the most important European states during the establishment of the liberal state, up to its crisis.

Course Prerequisites

Willingness to broaden one's cultural horizons through a comprehensive understanding of the history of the modern state and the welfare state up to their crisis, which the course aims to structure and deepen in individual topics and events, but which the student must verify or refine by integrating lectures and study with a personal interpretative approach.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activity will be conducted through lectures, with particular attention to discussion and direct dialogue with students, especially on topics related to the current debate about the future of the welfare state and the crisis of national welfare. If the course is delivered in a hybrid or online format, modifications may be introduced to the syllabus to make the course and exams accessible through these modes as well.

Assessment Methods

The final exam will be conducted orally, and the evaluation will be graded out of thirty. The examination will consist of three questions covering the entire program to assess students' acquisition of the concepts taught during the course. There are no intermediate tests planned.

Contents

The course will analyze the relationship between political institutions and the development of social security systems, addressing the emergence of the welfare state in the twentieth century and the subsequent strengthening of the relationship between the state and public services. It will also examine the sustainability of social intervention systems in the latter half of the twentieth century.
