The humanistic tradition in education, with special reference to the main thinkers of the time; the transition of the 16th century, with special attention to Jesuit education and the institution of boarding schools; the birth of the sentiment of childhood during the 16th century; the birth of the popular school between the 17th and 18th centuries; the Enlightenment through the main authors, especially Rousseau; the French Revolution and the development of the ideas of people and nation; nineteenth-century education and the question of nation-states, with special reference to the main cultural and philosophical pedagogical currents, especially Romanticism, idealism and positivism; the Italian Risorgimento and the birth of the nation-state; Catholic education, with special attention to the Italian context; the turn-of-the-century crisis and irrationalist philosophies; the 20th century and its main pedagogical theories, with special attention to the Italian context; totalitarian regimes and their relationship to culture; the postwar period and new perspectives; the new millennium and the present day.
