Syllabus

Course Objectives

After completing the course, the student understands the historical development of the museum as an educational and cultural mediation institution as well as its current role in contemporary society; he/she is familiar with the most important critical theories and methods of museum didactics; he/she will acquire the necessary skills to promote connections between museums and different audiences.

Teaching Methods

The type of teaching is lecture-based and is characterised by the practice of inclusion and the active participation of students. Visits to museums and direct contact with museum experts may be planned.


Assessment Methods

Oral exam. It lasts about 15/20 minutes and consists of three questions on the topics covered in class. The skills tested are:

  • knowledge of basic concepts;
  • critical thinking and methodological analysis;
  • personal elaboration of the topics discussed.

If there is a large number of participants, the final exam will be a written exam lasting 90 minutes. Students will have to answer three questions on the course content, which will be open-ended.


Contents

The course is divided into three interrelated sections:

  • Introduction to museum education: historical background, development and relevant legislation;
  • Methods and resources of museum education, in presence and through multimedia technologies;
  • The relationship of the museum with its audiences: strategies for inclusion and community engagement.

The sections of the reference texts that will be taken into account for the exam will be provided, along with the lecture materials, on the Moodle platform of the course. The lecture materials are an integral part of the study program. Please contact me by e-mail if you have difficulty finding them.
