Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (15/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The purpose of the course is to provide the student with basic notions of general chemistry. Particular attention will be devoted to the different types of bonding and attractions responsible for the properties of matter, so as to allow anticipating a material's physical and chemical properties on the basis of its chemical composition. Furthermore, the course will deal with the general principles of chemical equilibria, in order to allow predicting the behaviour of simple chemical systems on the basis of considerations concerning thermodynamic variables and composition.

Course Prerequisites

Basic notions on the states of matter, the meaning of chemical formulas, chemical equations, chemical nomenclature for binary compounds, use of dimensional analysis.

Teaching Methods

Lessons illustrating the concepts included in the program. Numerical exercises after the inherent lesson, to be performed by students preferably working in groups under the supervision of a tutor, to exemplify and apply to practical cases the illustrated concepts.

Assessment Methods

The exam is constituted by a written part and an oral part. The written part, whose duration will be 90 minutes, is constituted by 10 questions, each valued up to 3 points. All questions have the same value. There will be no penalty for wrong answers. Sufficiency (18/30) in the written part will grant admission to the oral part, which will include a discussion of the written test and questions on the whole program. The final vote will be determined by taking into consideration both the results of the written and oral parts, though it will not be calculated as their exact average. The written test can be substituted by two partial tests, one taking place at midterm and the other at the end of the course, each including 5 questions for a 45' duration. Sufficiency in both tests allows direct access to the oral exam.
