Syllabus

Course Objectives

After taking the course, the students will be familiar with the historical evolution, techniques, and key concepts of modern artificial intelligence and machine learning, with particular emphasis on neural networks and deep learning, and on the crucial role these technologies are playing in the development of generative artificial intelligence.


Course Prerequisites

None.


Teaching Methods

Frontal lectures with some guided laboratory activities.


Assessment Methods

The exam consists in a written test which includes both open-ended and closed-ended questions concerning theoretical topics and applications of the methods presented in the course.


Contents

  • The scientific discipline of Artificial Intelligence (AI): definition and investigative approaches
  • The foundations of AI at the intersection of computer science, philosophy, mathematics, economics, neuroscience, and psychology
  • Boolean algebra and propositional logic: the logical foundations of symbolic AI
  • Elements of computer science, formal languages, and imperative programming (with particular emphasis on Python)
  • Rational agents: taxonomy and types
  • The problem of finding the optimal action plan in a state space and an introduction to game-playing agents
  • History, evolution, and limits of symbolic AI
  • Neural networks and the rise of subsymbolic or connectionist AI: introduction to neural networks and deep learning
  • Generative artificial intelligence, chatbots (ChatGPT, Gemini, ...) and transformers
