Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course the student has the ability to grasp the meaning of an act or a linguistic event in the communicative context with particular attention to the interpersonal dimension. S/he will be able to interpret the communicative dynamics in a multicultural context.


Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of basic notions in Linguistics and Pragmatics.


Teaching Methods

Teaching activities will consist in lectures (30 hours), conducted with the aid of PowerPoint slides that will be uploaded to the e-learning course website. During

the training hours (6 hours), specialized websites will be used (Hofstede, etc.); the students will also analyze linguistic strategies of the speakers in relation to different real communicative situations (meetings, advertising communication, face to face communication, etc.).


Assessment Methods

To pass the exam of the entire integrated course of Pragmatic and interactional Linguistics it is necessary to pass the exam tests of both modules (Pragmatic Linguistics and Interactional Pragmatics) in the same exam session (excluding the intermediate test of mod. 1). The exam vote for the entire integrated course is calculated as the average of grades obtained in the two modules.

The MOD2 exam takes place in oral form and evaluation is expressed in 30/30. This test includes 4 questions on the exposed and commented themes as well as analysis of communicative situations, in order to verify the student's knowledge, lexical property and critical thinking skills.


Contents

The course focuses on the communicative act and in particular the linguistic action in relation to the context in which it takes place. In relation to the context variables, the communication strategies and linguistic choices of the speakers will be analyzed, assuming orality as the basic modality of the different types of communication. The cultural belonging is an important variable in the cross-cultural or intercultural interaction, therefore it will be the object of a theoretical-practical activity. Main themes:

• Communicative competence

• Context and communicative event,

• The structure of the interaction. Symmetric interactions vs. asymmetric.

• Allocution and indexicality

• Linguistic politeness and pragmatic reversal

• Communication and cultures

• Language and identity in a multicultural context

• Communicative competence in a multicultural context.

• Training hours: Preparing for communication in multicultural contexts: tools to learn about languages and cultures. Cultural conditioning in intercultural interaction: listening and communication styles.

More information

1) Students without basic knowledge in Linguistics are requested to study an introductory textbook on linguistics, or equivalent in other languages.

2) NON-ATTENDING STUDENTS have the same program as attending students.

3) ALL STUDENTS must regularly consult the e-learning site and download the materials indicated.

4) If the course will be taught in a blended or in a distance learning form, these guidelines may undergo a few changes in order to adapt the course, the exercises and the assessment to these forms. Students are invited to consult the e-learning area of the course for details on all these adjustments.
