Syllabus

Course Objectives

The philosophy’s degree programme aims to provide a solid grounding in the history of the Western philosophical tradition, in dialogue with other cultures. In particular, it wants to lay the foundations for an autonomous ability to produce, evaluate and discuss philosophical arguments, and also to deepen the logical and linguistic tools in the main areas of philosophical reflection. In line with these objectives, the course aims to analyse Aristotle's arguments found in the Nicomachean Ethics. At the end of the course, students will have gained an understanding of the content and methods of Aristotelian philosophy, not only through a doxographic-theoretical description, but above all through a detailed reading of one of Aristotle's most beloved and discussed texts. In particular, students will become familiar with the content and methods of Aristotelian ethics, which has been so important in the development of contemporary ethics. In doing so, students will also become familiar with one of the fundamental styles and methods of practising ancient and modern philosophy, the treatise.

Course Prerequisites

Knowledge of the most important doctrines in the history of ancient philosophy and a certain argumentative ability are required.

Teaching Methods

The course involves lectures, seminar presentations, and discussions.

Assessment Methods

The oral examination that is foreseen by the regulationswill be integrated with presentations in class or with a short (5-10 thousand word) dissertation on one of the themes of the set text. The final mark is expressed in thirties.

Contents

We know that Aristotle’s influence in ethics is difficult to overestimate. Today, philosophers continue to look to Aristotle for guidance and inspiration in many different areas, though perhaps Aristotle’s legacy is seen most overtly in the resurgence of virtue ethics which began in the last half of the twentieth century. The Nicomachean Ethics is then a key work not only for philosophers, but also for scholars interested in political and moral issues raised by the contemporary world. The module will focus especially on the careful analysis of the most relevant extracts of the Nicomachean Ethics.
