Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (14/09/2026 - 19/12/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

After completing the course the student will have basic knowledge about the choice of the structural scheme of steel structures, the theoretical aspects underlying the behavior of steel structural elements under various load conditions and the awareness of typical connections between steel elements. Given the loads on the various structural elements, the student will be able to select and apply the appropriate resistance domains and the verification methods considering the post-yield behavior of the material and the possible presence of instability phenomena. This knowledge will enable the student to address the design of structural steel structures following the basis of modern buidling codes and to understand the theoretical motivations underlying the formula proposed in such codes. The implementation of selected design homework will provide the student with the ability to define a design strategy, to propose appropriate technical solutions for the detailing and to evaluate the appropriateness of the chosen structural elements compared to the loading conditions.

Course Prerequisites

Useful knowledge not covered during the class (slides provided):

1 - The steel material.

2 - Structural safety.

3 - Actions on buildings.

Teaching Methods

Teaching will take place through frontal lectures open to discussion with the students. The slides of the course and of the exercises will be provided to the students. The slides are a useful tool for learning but do not replace the notes taken in class and / or the study on textbooks A mentoring program is provided focusing on practical design aspects: from the choice of the static scheme to the verification of the structural elements.

Assessment Methods

The final exam will be oral and will be preceded by the submission of design exercises developed individually or in pairs, as directed by the instructor. Submission of the exercises is a prerequisite for the exam, as they allow the student to assess his or her ability to apply design and verification methods to structural cases. The exercises do not automatically earn a separate score, but are discussed in part during the oral exam.

Before the oral exam, a formative review of the projects will be conducted, during which students will present the design choices made, the structural scheme adopted, the verification criteria, the resistance domains, and the main capacity checks for elements and connections. The review is for educational purposes and allows for the correction of any critical issues prior to the exam.

The final grade, expressed out of 30, will take into account the student's ability to discuss and justify design choices, knowledge and application of theoretical and regulatory foundations, clarity of presentation, correct use of technical language, and critical analysis skills.

More information

The course materials will be made available on the course's Moodle platform. PDFs of lectures, exercise materials, notes written or developed in class, any summary diagrams, and useful instructions for completing the project assignments will be uploaded.
The slides, notes, and examples provided are tools to support study, but do not replace personal notes, study of reference texts, and critical understanding of theoretical and applied aspects. The project assignments require autonomy in selecting hypotheses, building the calculation model, applying verifications, and interpreting the results from an engineering perspective.
Non-attending students are required to prepare the entire course syllabus using the materials available on Moodle and the reference texts indicated. They must also complete the design assignments required for the exam, according to the methods indicated by the instructor. Non-attending students are advised to contact the instructor at the beginning or during the semester to receive guidance on how to complete the assignments, how to review them, and which topics to study in depth for the oral exam.
