Contents

The fundamentals of Italian morphology, syntax and vocabulary will be given, thus providing a concise overview of the grammar of our language. In particular, attention will be paid to lexical classifications and language registers, parts of speech and their morphological characteristics, the syntax of the simple sentence and the complex sentence; attention will also be paid to so-called marked sentences and their contexts of use.

For such a synthesis, the grammatical knowledge acquired in the course of previous studies is assumed.

Alongside these topics, focus will be placed on the classification and production of various types of text. Particular attention will be paid to summarising, which, although an essential skill for any type of study, is often a difficulty even for university students.

This second part of the course will combine frontal, more theoretical lectures with lessons focusing on the analysis and summary of texts of various kinds (narrative, informative, argumentative).

More information

Attendance is strongly recommended.

In the second semester, an ADS (subsidiary teaching activity) of Italian language of 30 hours will be held. More precise information will be communicated during the first semester.

Bibliography:

  • Massimo Palermo, "Linguistica italiana", Il Mulino, Bologna 2020, seconda edizione, capitoli: I, II, III e VI.
  • Luca Serianni, "Italiani scritti", Il Mulino, Bologna 2020, terza edizione.

Students who are aware of having little grammatical knowledge are also advised to fill in their gaps by consulting the following volume, available in the library:

  • Pietro Trifone - Massimo Prada, "Grammatica italiana di base", Zanichelli, Bologna 2022.
  • Maurizio Dardano - Pietro Trifone, "La nuova grammatica della lingua italiana", Zanichelli, Bologna 1997.

Another useful tool to improve one's skills in summarising is:

  • "In poche parole. Riassunto e abstract: modelli e strategie," a cura di Silvia T. Zangrandi, Bologna, Patron 2022.
