Course Objectives

The course provides a critical understanding of contemporary history from the late

nineteenth century to the present day. Students will develop the ability to analyse

political, economic, social and cultural processes using the main interpretative

frameworks of contemporary historiography.

There is no prerequisite

Teaching Methods

Lectures, discussion of primary sources and historical documents, historiographical
analysis and multimedia resources.

Assessment Methods

Oral examination assessing historical knowledge, critical thinking and appropriate
use of disciplinary terminology.

3. The post-war settlement and the new international order.
4. Fascism, Nazism and totalitarian regimes.
5. The USSR, the Great Depression and the interwar world.
6. The Second World War.
7. Origins and evolution of the Cold War.
8. Rival blocs, decolonisation and international crises.
9. Détente, the Second Cold War and global transformations.
10. The end of the Cold War and the contemporary world.
