TITLE OF THE MODULE - INDIVIDUALS AND SOCIETY ON THE SCREEN: ARABIC COUNTRIES, CHINA, JAPAN

This course will offer students an introduction to the history and languages of cinema by examining the relationship between the individual and society in Arab countries (especially Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Maghreb countries) and East Asian countries (especially China, Japan and Taiwan). In the constant dynamic between history, collectivity and individual subjectivities, the course will illuminate some fundamental theoretical nodes for understanding the development of the medium in these areas, dwelling on issues such as: the relationship with traditional spectacular forms; the development of the genre system and its relationship with Hollywood models; formal experimentalism in both fiction and documentary cinema; the role of animation, including serial animation; and the relationship with other media (e.g. literature, video games etc.).
