They will also possess basic knowledge in the field of gender and queer studies applied to cinema.

Lectures that will involve the active involvement of students. Collective viewing and commentary of audiovisual passages of particular relevance.

Assessment Methods

The examination will be conducted orally and in English. The interview, consisting of 3-4 questions on the course content and the films in the program, will test not only knowledge of the content, but also the use of appropriate terminology and the ability to independently apply the concepts learned. Attending students will have the opportunity to take a written test in English at the end of the course on a specific part of the program; if passed, the test will contribute to the determination of the exam grade.

TITLE OF THE MODULE - CINEMA, GENDER AND DESIRE, FROM MALE GAZE TO QUEER CINEMA

The course traces the fundamental steps in the history of cinema from its origins to the present day, privileging the analysis of films capable of problematizing salient issues related to gender. Beginning with Laura Mulvey's assumption that classical Hollywood cinema is based on rigidly defined dynamics of gaze and power, the course will examine the ways in which the feminine and, later on, the queer have been represented by mainstream and auteur cinema, coming to construct spaces of legitimacy and self-representation over time. Beyond reconstructing the main theoretical and aestheticological articulations of film history, the course will offer students tools for analyzing audiovisual texts, also in dialogue with other media (television seriality, video game etc.).
