Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (23/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to deepen the knowledge required in the Prerequisites through the development of some specific literary movements or themes and authors. This will enable students not only to fix the highlights of the Italian literary history of the periods considered, but also to trace the biographies and works of the greatest writers who have characterized them and, in particular, to apply the reading and practice exegesis of the texts proposed. With this, students will gain those instruments of contextualization and critical analysis that are essential in the study of literature in general.

Course Prerequisites

Students must have a solid knowledge of both the main movements and authors of nineteenth-century Italian literature, from Neoclassicism to Verismo, and a good competence in the basic notions of rhetoric, stylistics and metrics.

Teaching Methods

Lectures, with special attention to the direct dialogue with students and to any proposals for deepening.

Assessment Methods

The exam is oral and tests the ability to read, stylistically analyze (metrics, rhetorical figures, etc.) and critically comment on the prose and/or poetry texts covered by the program to ensure the assimilation of the specific contents of the course and at the same time testing the argumentative skills of the students. The exam will take place through open questions (three or four per interview) relating to the manuals, critical texts and author’s texts being read in the program and aimed at verifying the acquisition of the aforementioned training objectives and compliant with the general objectives of the Course of Study. The formulation of the final mark out of thirty takes into account the overall preparation shown during the interview in relation to all parts of the program and the expository and linguistic ability in the Italian language.

Contents

Giacomo Leopardi. After a brief introduction dedicated to providing a general overview of the historical-cultural context in which Romanticism and Romantic art as a whole (literature, painting and music) were born, the course will focus on the poetic and prose works of Giacomo Leopardi.
