Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course aims to provide the basic conceptual tools for the logical analysis of declarative discourse (nouns, functors, relations, connectives, quantifiers) and rational arguments (truth tables, Beth trees, notion of logical consequence), in order to develop in students the analytical skills necessary for the organization and communication of philosophical thought.

Course Prerequisites

None.

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons. In any case, attending students will be given the opportunity to build, during the final phase of the course, moments of seminar discussion around texts and problems of contemporary logic.

Assessment Methods

Written and oral exam. The exam will be divided into two parts: the first, through a written exam, is aimed at verifying, through the solution of exercises, the ability to apply the notions learned through the study of texts to simple problems of analysis and logical deduction examination.
The second part, through an oral exam which will be held as soon as the written test is completed, aims to evaluate the level of understanding and the ability to clearly expose the results and methods used in the written exam. The final mark will be the average between the result of the written test and the result of the oral test.

Contents

1) Introduction to classical propositional and predicative logic: Logical analysis and formalization of declarative discourse; -Classical conception of logical connectives; Truth tables; - Logical quantifiers; Beth's counterexample method (tableaux); Naive introduction to non-classical logics.


2) Historical introduction to the problem of foundations of mathematics between XIX and XX century: set theory and the continuum problem.

2) During the course, attending students will be distributed by the teacher a series of texts on 20th century logic.
