Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the course in "Globalization and Migration in Contemporary History" is: to provide students with the essential knowledge of the major phenomena and processes that have led to the progressive economic, technological, political, and cultural integration of human societies; to foster their ability to critically assess contemporary social, political, and economic developments. The course will examine the principal historical developments of the twentieth century, exploring their defining features and critically discussing the main scholarly interpretations.



Course Prerequisites

No particular pre-requisites needed. The course of Contemporary History will be held in the first semester.

Teaching Methods

The course will consist of lectures, during which the viewing of audiovisual materials (fragments of documentaries, film materials, television debates) documenting facts of particular historical interest will be regularly offered. Classroom discussion will be stimulated with the audiovisual documents and printed materials presented.

Assessment Methods

The examination generally consists of a two hours written test. Students who wish to take an oral test as an alternative to the written one are required to contact the lecturer via email one week before the date of the exam. The written test will include five open-ended questions, where clarity, synthesis, and the relevance of the answers will be particularly appreciated. All students are invited to read the entire questions carefully before answering. It will be very important, also, to write clearly, as poor spelling and syntax hinder comprehension, which may lead to a negative assessment. The final aim is to assess basic knowledge of contemporary history. The results will be published on the course website following standard procedures.

Professor Barcella reserves the right to require an additional oral examination, even after the written test has been completed, if deemed necessary in order to verify the effective acquisition of the knowledge and skills outlined in the course learning objectives and to ensure the correct assignment of the final grade.

Contents

The course aims to provide a historical reconstruction of the stages that have led to the progressive integration of economies and human societies. A theoretical reflection on the concept of globalization will be followed by an examination of its major phases of development, with particular attention to the key turning points of the twentieth century. Within this framework, the course will analyze international mass migration as a phenomenon that, on the one hand, was made possible by the economic and technological processes underpinning globalization and, on the other, has constituted one of its most significant dimensions from the perspective of social and cultural history.
