Syllabus
Course Objectives
The course aims to deepen the knowledge required in the prerequisites through a study of specific literary movements, themes, and authors. This will allow students not only to identify the key moments in Italian literary history during the period under consideration, but also to retrace the biographies and works of the major writers who characterized it. In particular, it will allow students to apply themselves to reading and practicing exegesis of the proposed texts. Students will thus acquire the tools of contextualization and critical analysis essential to the study of literature in general.
Course Prerequisites
Students must have a solid knowledge of 19th-century Italian literature, covering the following topics, movements, and authors:
- Neoclassicism with Vincenzo Monti and Ugo Foscolo
- Romanticism with Alessandro Manzoni and Giacomo Leopardi
- Opera with Giuseppe Verdi
- Ippolito Nievo
- The literature of New Italy with the Scapigliatura and Giosuè Carducci
- Verismo with Luigi Capuana, Giovanni Verga, and Federico De Roberto
- Children’s literature with Carlo Collodi and Edmondo De Amicis
- Decadentism and Aestheticism with Gabriele d'Annunzio
- Giovanni Pascoli
In addition, students must select and read in their entirety two texts from those listed in the bibliography in section “A2. Supplementary bibliography”.

Teaching Methods
Lectures, with a focus on direct dialogue with students and any suggestions for further study and deepening.
Assessment Methods
The exam is oral. The exam will assess:
- knowledge of the historical and literary context indicated in the Prerequisites;
- the ability to read, stylistically analyse (metrics, rhetorical figures, etc.), and critically comment on the prose and/or poetry texts covered in the program and required in the Prerequisites;
- students' argumentative skills and, therefore, their ability to respond to the instructor's questions in correct Italian and in a coherent, logical, and comprehensive manner.
The exam will therefore consist of open-ended questions relating to:
- knowledge of 19th-century Italian literature required in the Prerequisites and texts chosen by students from those listed in the bibliography in section "A2. Supplementary Bibliography". Failure to pass this part of the exam will result in non-admission to the next one.
- the topics covered in the course according to the four parts indicated.
The purpose of the exam is therefore to verify the acquisition of the learning objectives already indicated and consistent with those of the course of study.
The final grade, expressed out of thirtieths, considers the overall preparation demonstrated by the student during the interview in relation to all parts of the program and his or her ability to express himself or herself clearly and correctly, using appropriate vocabulary.

Contents
Forms of the Nineteenth-Century Novel: Naturalism and Verism. The course aims to deepen the knowledge required in the prerequisites through a four-part curriculum:
1) Introduction to the study of narrative and the novel as a literary genre: history, forms, and subgenres;
2) History, culture, and literature of New Italy;
3) Naturalism in France and Europe;
4) Verismo in Italy: Capuana, Verga, and De Roberto.

The course will take place in the first semester and will be taught in Italian. Course syllabi are valid for three years.
