Syllabus

Course Objectives

Basic knowledge and critical skills about the historical and political evolution of West-Asia and Middle East, with a focus on Ottoman Empire and Persian Empire international relations, and on the Euro-Asiatic relations in the Modern Age.

Course Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of history from Medieval period to Contemporary age, which can be acquired using a good secondary school textbook.


Teaching Methods

Lectures, critical discussion on the points touched during the course.

Assessment Methods

Assessment of the knowledge and skills will be acquired through an oral interview about the books in program (at least 3 open questions).


Contents

Some important political and cultural features on the West-Asian States and societies, with a focus on Ottoman Empire and Persia (Iran), and their relations with Western powers, between 16th and 20th centuries, e.g.: the Mediterranean and the Middle East in early Modern Age; the Silk Road; Islam and Christianity in the modern age (16th-18th centuries); the Turks and the origin of Ottoman Empire; the ottoman Caliphate; Persian Empire in Modern Age; Eurasian relations in the 18th and 19th centuries; the Eastern Question; the First World War in the Middle East; the policy of Mandates and the “restructuring” of post-war Middle East.

- Normally exam of 9.0 cfu. In the case of exam of 5.0, 6.0 or 10.0 cfu, please contact Professor Vaghi (massimiliano.vaghi@unibg.it) at the least one month before the date of exam.
