By the end of the course, students will:
Expected learning outcomes include:
a) knowledge of the main approaches in contemporary philosophy of mind;
b) the ability to read and critically assess philosophical texts;
c) the ability to construct and evaluate arguments concerning mental phenomena and the human person.
Some familiarity with the reading of philosophical essays in the analytic tradition is useful though not strictly necessary.
The course is conducted through a combination of: (a) lectures; (b) collective reading and discussion of some texts; and (c) oral presentations by students (followed by discussion) on essays selected in consultation with the teacher.
Assessment may take place according to one of the following two formats:
Both the written and the oral assessments are designed to evaluate students' knowledge of the problems, methods, and arguments of contemporary philosophy of mind and the philosophy of cognitive science, their ability to read and critically assess a philosophical essay, and their capacity to discuss independently issues concerning mind, consciousness, and personhood that require the dialectical interplay of science and philosophy.
The final grade is expressed on a thirty-point scale. In the case of a written assessment, the result will be published on the course webpage. In the case of an oral assessment, the result will be communicated immediately after the examination.
