At the end of the course, students will gain: familiarity with the fundamental concepts and problems of modal metaphysics, knowledge of the most fundamental approaches and discussions of last decades in this field, elementary knowledge of the relations between metaphysics of possible worlds, modal logic, and modal semantics
All the exams will be oral, with at least three questions for any exam and the subsequent discussion of each of the student's answers. The exam is aimed to assess the detailed knowledge of the philosophical approaches that have been presented in the course and their fundamental pros and cons, as well as the familiarity with the fundamental methods of analytic metaphysics. Evaluations will be in thirtieths.
Starting from the half of last century, Leibniz’s idea of a possible world has been employed to ground a systematic account of possibility and necessity. The course deals with possible worlds metaphysics, focusing in particular on the following issues: The ontological status of possible worlds and possible individuals; The problem of identity across worlds; The relation between possible worlds metaphysics and modal semantics; The relation between possible worlds metaphysics and modal logic
