Course Objectives

The main objective of the course is to train candidates on the theoretical and practical aspects of anatomy and physiology.
The student will acquire the knowledge of anatomy as well as of biochemical, electrophysiological, and mechanical phenomena that underlie the physiological functions of the human body, creating the basis for understanding the main pathophysiological mechanisms.
To support theoretical knowledge, a second objective is to enable the student to tackle quantitative problems concerning human physiology.

Teaching Methods

The teaching activity consists mainly of lectures. These are complemented by exercises based on the solution of practical and quantitative examples.

Assessment Methods

The final assessment is based on a written exam consisting of a series of close and open questions and quantitative problems to solve. Obtaining a minimum threshold for both the theorical and the quantitative section is needed to pass the exam.
Alternatively, during the course, learning can be assessed through two written tests (same format as the final assessment: close and open questions + quantitative problems), one in the middle and one at the end of the course. The teacher has the possibility to request an integrative oral exam, even after the written exam, whenever needed to verify the knowledge and competences in agreement with the aims of the course, and the correct evaluation of the student.

1) Energy regulation systems and metabolism.

2) Nervous system. Anatomy. Neurophysiology of excitable cells, passive and active properties, nerve conduction, synaptic transmission, receptor transduction, sensory and motor pathways, corticospinal systems, visual and auditory systems, vestibular system and posture, EEG, evoked potentials, sleep-wake cycle, autonomic nervous system, thermoregulation.

3) Musculoskeletal system. Anatomy. Muscle fibers, contractility, muscle mechanics, motor units, EMG, reflexes, smooth muscle.

4) Cardiovascular system. Anatomy. Principles of hemodynamics, cardiac pump and intrinsic control, ECG, arterial circulation, capillary circulation and transport, lymphatic and venous circulation, nervous and humoral control of circulation. Coagulation and fibrinolysis.

5) Respiratory system. Anatomy. Respiratory mechanics, gas exchange and transport, nervous and chemical control of respiration.

6) Excretory system. Anatomy. Volume and composition of body fluids, glomerular and tubular uropoietic mechanisms, renal circulation, concept of clearance, osmolarity control, volume regulation, acid-base balance.

7) Digestive system. Anatomy and physiology.

8) Endocrine system. Anatomy and physiology.
