Abstract:
This paper discusses the relapses of the Shakespearian theatre on Alfred Döblin’s late works with a particular interest in his last novel entitled Hamlet oder die lange Nacht nimmt ein Ende. The plot of the novel, as well as its characters and their psychological insight, is clearly inspired by Shakespeare’s Hamlet and King Lear. Thus, the paper highlights the similarities and differences between these shakespearian models and Döblin’s Hamlet in order to understand the reasons for their aesthetic and psychoanalytic rewriting within the author’s literary production after WWII.
