Syllabus

Course Objectives

Aim of the course is to provide insights on the basic principles of the Quality Management in manufacturing and service companies and on the techniques for the continuous improvement of product and process. The aim is also to provide problem solving methods and techniques suitable for successfully dealing with the improvement challenges of the organizations.

Course Prerequisites

Teaching Methods

Lectures and exercices with practical examples and application of the various techniques introduced.
Discussion on the results obtained and suggestions derivable from the practical use of the different techniques.
Case Studies and examples of output interpretation.
Seminars by healthcare experts.

Assessment Methods

The final examination consists in distinguishing between true or false statements concerning the different quality aspectcs, in replying to questions on the theoretical quality principles and techniques, in applying the quality techniques to practical cases also giving an interpretation of the results.
The exam is normally written and the duration is approximately 2 hours.
The three parts are approximately equally evaluated in the definition of the final grade.

The meaning of quality.
The meaning of the continuous improvement.
Reference standards.
The seven principles of quality.
Approach to processes.
Documentary system for quality management.
Definition and use of indexes and indicators.
Certification of product and process.
The seven Quality Tools for process improvement:
- check sheet;
- histogram;
- cause-and-effect diagram;
- Pareto chart;
- stratification;
- scatter diagram;
- control charts.
Introduction and application of techniques for quality improvement and risk analysis:
- FTA
- FMEA/FMECA.
Robust design concept.
Introduction and application of techniques for the statistical study of the data for quality improvement: ANOM, ANOVA, DOE.
Overview on six-sigma concept.
Examples, application cases and practical exercises.
