Course Objectives

At the end of the course, students - having interwoven their personal and professional experience with the texts studied - will have developed a clearer critical awareness of the pedagogical foundations guiding educational, instructional, and organizational choices within early childhood services, with particular attention to the following themes:


- the autonomy of young children

- free choice

- progressive education

- the educational significance of care

- rules

- encouragement

- children’s sociality

- example

- emotions in childhood

- dialogue between adults and children

Teaching Methods

The course will be structured with moments of lecture-based teaching and discussion sessions, during which students will be encouraged to reflect on the texts and connect the pedagogical content to their personal and professional experiences in educational settings (particularly in early childhood services). Teaching materials used during the course will be made available on Moodle, along with instructions for assigned activities and any additional bibliographic references for further study.


Assessment Methods

The teaching/learning process will be continuously monitored through students’ feedback and reflective responses during and at the end of each lesson.

A single final examination of 120 minutes is scheduled. The exam will be written and will consist of three open-ended questions on the texts listed in the bibliography (one of which will address a work by M. Montessori). The evaluation criteria will be as follows: relevance and completeness; accuracy in the use of concepts and disciplinary terminology; orthographic, syntactic, and semantic correctness; personal and critical elaboration.

Exclusively for attending students who have submitted the written assignments given during the course, it will be possible to take a mid-term examination during the final class session. This will consist of a written test with three open-ended questions. The result of this test (if positive) will be taken into account in determining the final grade.

- The integrated system of early childhood education and care from birth to age six

- The contemporary relevance and limitations of Montessori pedagogy

- Some of the most significant pedagogical issues arising in current nursery practices, revisited through selected classics of pedagogy and educational sciences

- The relationship between early childhood education services and family education

- The emerging educational challenges stemming from the socio-cultural transformations that have shaped Western societies in recent decades
