Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (15/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The course explains the main classes of non metallic materials: polymer, traditional and innovative ceramics, glass, wood and composites. Mechanical and physical properties, main applications, processing technologies and degradation of thermoplastic and thermoset polymers, elastomers and fibers, polymer matrix composites, advanced ceramics, metal matrix composites and ceramics are illustrated. Moreover, seminars on timber and fiber-reinforced concrete are available for students enrolled in the Building Engineering program.

Course Prerequisites

Basic chemistry. The knowledge of topics as stress, strain and modulus of elasticity of materials is strongly recommended

Teaching Methods

lecture with slides

Assessment Methods

Written exam with 30 multiple choice questions (right answer = 1 point, wrong or missing answer = 0 point). With marks equal or higher than 18/30 it is possible to take the oral exam.
