Overview

Date/time interval

Secondo Semestre (23/02/2026 - 06/06/2026)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

Students will acquire the basic knowledge related to production systems and methods of production planning, scheduling and control. These concepts are useful for the development of fundamental skills that allow students to understand how to plan, organize and manage the production system within a manufacturing company.
In particular, students will acquire knowledge that allows them to classify a production system, to measure its performance and to analyze the main related costs. Moreover, they learn how to use the methods and techniques of production planning and control. In this sense, the student will learn how to use the acquired knowledge to analyze and elaborate production data to support the decision system.

Course Prerequisites

none

Teaching Methods

The course encompasses: lectures (a total of 32 hours), aimed at illustrating the basic concepts of the course contents, and tutorials (for a total of 16 hours), in which numerical exercises and industrial cases are performed.
Moreover, guided tours to local manufacturing companies and / or key speeches from industry professionals and managers are planned in order to give the students the opportunity to consolidate the theoretical contents assimilated during the lectures.

Assessment Methods

The exam is written and oral.
The written tests (whole or partial) are divided into two parts each with a value of 15 points.
1st part: numerical exercises
2nd part: theory (V/F, open questions, definitions)

The correction of part 2 is subject from obtaining a minimum score of 9 points in part 1 of the Exam.
If you score less than 9 points in the 1st part of the examination, the 2nd part will not be corrected and the exam will therefore be considered insufficient.
The written tests will be passed with a minimum mark of 18 points.
During the exam it is not allowed to refer to any type of material (notes, books, notes ...).
Once passed the written test, the oral test can be performed exclusively during the same session.
The oral exam allows to increase the grade obtained in the written test by a maximum of 3 points. It can take place in two modalities:
- through one home taken assignment discussed during the semester; The discussion lasts around 30 minutes;

- through an oral examination aiming at evaluating the student knowledge which will take place after the written exam (1 week after). The oral exam can be attended only in the same session of the written exam successfully passed. The oral exam lasts about 40 minutes

The case study execution is recommended by the teacher because not only contributes to the acquisition of the basic concepts of the course, but it favours the acquisition of communication and team working skills. The case study is executed during the lecture’s period. The case studies grades have one-year validity.
To access to the oral exam the minimum grade of the written exam is 18.
