- critically reflect about the possible different configurations of such components, searching for a good fit/alignment between them and with the environment;
- analyze business cases, determine the role of organizational behavior and design issues in organizational performance problems, and specify design changes to remedy the core problem(s);
- understand how organizations can evolve towards more sustainable and harmonious organizational design configurations.
Basic knowledge of organization theories is suggested.
Lectures, exercises, discussion of cases, students’ presentations.
Attendance is mandatory. Students will need to attend at least 75% of the course. This means that students can skip 3 classes at most (1 about OB and 2 about OD).
The final grade in the course will be based on the following:
Class participation, case analyses and students’ presentations = 40% (12/30)
Final exam (multiple choice test) = 60% (18/30)
One part of the course (10 hours) deals with basic concepts in organizational behavior such as attitudes, emotions, motivation, personality and group dynamics, which are relevant for understanding the micro-level components of organizational design. In the remaining part of the course (26 hours) a general framework for organizational design (OD) will be illustrated and analyzed in detail in all its components. The main topics of the OD part of the course include: organizational ethics and the environment, organizational structure, culture, strategy and the impact of technology on organizational design. The final lesson of the course, through the concept of sustainable organizational change, is devoted to understand how it is possible to transition towards organizations that are more internally aligned, and externally fitted with the environment.
Please, note that just students with the necessary prerequisites and regularly enrolled to the Summer Business Program of exchange with the University of Missouri can participate to this course and take the final exam.
