Overview

Date/time interval

Primo Semestre (15/09/2025 - 20/12/2025)

Syllabus

Course Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge of modern virtual prototyping technologies, i.e. the creation of the “digital twin” of a product, machine or plant, and physical prototyping through Additive Manufacturing technologies. Themes characterizing industry 4.0 and 5.0 will be addressed with particular attention to new technologies supporting design, such as Advanced Reverse Engineering, Design for Additive Manufacturing, Product Shape Optimization. At the end of the course, students will have all the tools that allow them to create a virtual prototype and manage it for multiple purposes in the different phases of the product life cycle.

Course Prerequisites

Industrial technical drawing

Teaching Methods

Teaching will be carried out through lessons and guided practical exercises for the use of 3D modeling and simulation systems. The exercises will be organized to allow students to work with increasing autonomy but with constant supervision and support.

Assessment Methods

The exam consists of two parts to be taken on the same day:

1. creation and presentation of a product development project to be carried out in a group (max 3 people) on a pre-established topic (80% of the final grade)

2. oral exam on the contents of the lectures (20% of the final grade).

Contents

Product development process and product life cycle. Role of the virtual prototype in the product development phases. Evolution of the concept of product modeling and simulation. Advanced Reverse Engineering techniques. Additive Manufacturing technologies. Design for Additive Manufacturing, topological and structural optimizers and their role in the creation of virtual and physical prototypes, Generative Design Topology Optimization. Extended reality.
