Course Objectives

Students learn the costs and benefits of joining a monetary union, the main economic institutions that govern the Eurozone (EZ) and how the working of the EZ compares to that of other monetary areas.

The objectives of the EZ fiscal and monetary policy, the economic instruments that institutions can rely on, their implementation and effectiveness are key topics of the course.

Specific events and related issues, namely the 2009 financial crisis, the 2012 sovereign debt crisis, the 2020 pandemic as well as the inflation peak in 2022 will be used to study how institutions and policy instruments have changed in the recent years.

How EZ institutions are reacting to climate change and policies implemented to cope with related socio-economic issues are also considered.

By the end of the course students will have also learnt the scales of the phenomena and will be able to use official statistics websites and publications to find relevant datasets and economic data.

Course Prerequisites

Students must have knowledge of the basics of Economics, equivalent to those covered in an introductory course in Economics or in a bachelor's degree-level course in Macroeconomics and Microeconomics

Teaching Methods

The main teaching method is the lecture.

However, attending students will be involved in group work aimed at deepening specific topics. Each group must prepare a presentation, including an empirical section, and present it in class, where it will be discussed.

The overall evaluation of this part will be based both on the quality of one's own presentation and on active participation in the presentations of other groups.

Non-attending students, not participating in the group work, will be required to prepare two scientific papers indicated by the instructor and answer an additional exam question concerning the papers themselves.

Slides and relevant teaching materials (articles and papers) will be available on the course's e-learning page.

Assessment Methods

70% based on a written exam with essay-like questions.

30% based on the presentation of the teamwork and overall participation in the class during the presentations.

For non-attending students, as well as those who will not present their own work in class, the evaluation will be entirely based on the open-ended question exam. For this, they will have to prepare two additional articles indicated by the instructor and answer an additional question.
