Course Objectives
The course aims to develop language skills to reach level 2-3 of the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standard (equivalent to HSK3), to improve the ability to read and translate texts of medium difficulty with different thematic and linguistic registers, and to acquire knowledge of the syntactic aspects of written putonghua of medium register.
In addition, the course provides knowledge of the pragmatic aspects of communicating with Chinese speakers in conversations in contexts familiar to the students.
By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to understand the main points of conversations in both professional and non-professional contexts, thanks to their knowledge of the most common basic grammatical structures of middle-level putonghua. They should also be able to produce simple related texts, describe experiences and events, wishes and plans, and give explanations.

Assessment Methods
1. Assessment of Language Skills (AAL) – CLA
The AAL tests (written and oral) are administered by the CLA and must be completed before taking the examination of the course.
The CLA communicates the overall AAL result to the instructor, and this constitutes a mandatory requirement for admission to the course examination.
For the contents of the AAL, as well as for the procedures and the calendar of the related assessment tests, please refer to the CLA website.
2. Assessment of the course “Chinese Language II – Linguistics and Translation”
The assessment of the course consists of two components, for a total of 30/30.
a) Oral examination on the institutional contents of the course (max 20/30)
Students must demonstrate the ability to discuss the topics covered in class in an appropriate manner and to show a critical and comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.
b) Analysis of the lexical items covered in class (max 10/30)
Students must demonstrate knowledge of the lexical items presented during the course and the ability to analyse them, illustrating their semantic, morphosyntactic, and usage-related features.
The final grade for the course is the sum of the scores obtained in the two components.
3. Final grade
The final grade recorded for the course is the average between:
the grade obtained in the AAL (propedeutic component administered by the CLA);
the grade obtained in the course Chinese Language II – Linguistics and Translation (translation, grammar, and linguistics).
Evaluation grid (out of 30 points):
Excellent (30 cum laude) – Knowledge and skills fully acquired and applied with precision, effectiveness, and autonomy. No errors.
Very good (30–27) – Very solid knowledge and skills, applied correctly and confidently. Minor and non-recurring errors.
Good (26–24) – Adequate knowledge and skills, with some uncertainty or imprecision. Errors present but not serious or systematic.
Sufficient (23–18) – Basic knowledge and skills acquired, but applied partially or with evident errors. Overall understanding sufficient.
Insufficient (below 18) – Gaps in knowledge and inadequately developed skills. Numerous errors compromising the success of the task.
