Syllabus

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the student will be familiar with the linguistic and pragmatic features of the main types of texts (both written and spoken) that characterise the Italian linguistic heritage. He/she will be able to analyse and identify the linguistic peculiarities of the principal textual genres, taking into account their historical and cultural context. In addition, the student will understand the theoretical foundations of text-driven linguistic analysis and will be able to use digital tools typical of corpus linguistics to carry out text-based linguistic investigations.

Course Prerequisites

To have attended a General Linguistics course.

Teaching Methods

Teaching activities will consist of lectures alternating with workshop sessions. Lectures will be delivered with the support of PowerPoint slides, which will be uploaded to the course's e-learning platform.

Assessment Methods

Assessment is carried out through either a written or an oral examination, and the final grade is expressed on a scale of thirty points.

There is no difference in content between the two modes of assessment. Five of the eight exam sessions scheduled throughout the academic year (specifically those in the winter and summer sessions) will be in written form, while the remaining sessions will be oral. Students may choose the exam format they prefer.

Both the written and oral exams constitute the complete assessment. The grade awarded may be accepted or declined at the student’s discretion, but it is considered final and does not require the completion of any additional tests.

The written exam consists of two parts: a first section with closed-ended questions (e.g. multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, etc.) and a second section with open-ended questions. The oral exam consists of a series of questions on the course topics, aimed at assessing the student’s knowledge, lexical accuracy, and critical thinking skills.

Contents

The course focuses on linguistic analysis, with particular emphasis on the examination of texts as testimonies of past and present communities, in search of distinctive cultural markers.

Its aim is to provide foundational knowledge and analytical skills for understanding the linguistic features of both spoken and written texts produced within various linguistic communities, from both contemporary and historical contexts. The course explores some of the main textual types and genres, their discursive traditions and properties, their functioning, and the cognitive and communicative mechanisms involved in their production.

Special attention will be given to:

  • how the analysis of different linguistic phenomena contributes to a more accurate historical and cultural framing of various text types;
  • the concept of discourse tradition , the related notions and distinctions, and how these can be applied to the appreciation and promotion of oral and written cultural heritage, both past and present;
  • tools and methods for collecting and analysing linguistic data, with a particular focus on the resources offered by digital linguistics.
