Syllabus
Course Objectives
The course aims to provide students with an overview of the world of translation of various contemporary French-language texts and genres. To this end, the course will focus on the comparative analysis of a selection of
authoritative existing translations of the same source text, covering a range of literary genres. Particular attention will also be paid to introducing the available online resources: monolingual, bilingual and collaborative dictionaries, lexicographical databases, reference corpora and their correct use. The course aims to achieve the following learning objectives: firstly, to equip students with the cognitive, interpretative and intercultural mediation skills relevant to the fields of study covered by the programme; secondly, to develop linguistic and translation-related competence enabling students to make and justify their own translation choices in light of the issues involved.

The course is divided into two main parts, covering the first and second semesters respectively. By the end of the first semester, students will be familiar with the key aspects of spoken French. By the end of the second semester, students will be familiar with the key aspects of French vocabulary from a morphological and semantic point of view.
They will also have strengthened their skills in the four communication skills of level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

Course Prerequisites
Passing the French Language Exam 1. Knowledge of French equivalent to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Teaching Methods
Lectures delivered in the classroom using PowerPoint presentations, designed to provide a concise overview of the essentials of translation theory; practical sessions.

In order to achieve level B2 of the CEFR, students must attend the language learning activities (AAL B2) scheduled as part of the weekly timetable, as well as the tutoring activities provided during the year (see University Language Centre).

Assessment Methods
The written examination will consist of the translation of a text falling within one of the areas covered during the course, and students may make use of the resources presented during the course, as well as the main IT tools. The examination will take place in the computer lab and will last two hours. In addition to the translation, students will be asked to explain at least one of the translation choices they have made, in relation to certain critical points in the text. The oral examination, on the other hand, will have three objectives: (1) to assess the assimilation of theoretical knowledge, (2) to measure the actual level of oral proficiency in French, and (3) to test the ability to explain a specific topic in French.
Contents
Having introduced the systematic principles of a theoretical approach to translation, the course will focus on text comprehension, ranging from its overall characteristics (text genre, target audience, implicit meaning, communicative intentions, register and language level) to its internal structure and content, with particular attention paid to cultural elements and different linguistic codes. This will be followed by practical exercises dedicated to the translation of various text types related to the publishing world. These exercises will be structured around a two-fold approach: practical, as they will involve collaborative and group translations (agreed in advance and to be presented to the class), supported by a comparative analysis of several existing translations of the same text; and theoretical, drawing on specific essays on translation.
Relevant linguistic concepts, with particular attention to synonymy, polysemy and homonymy, will be discussed where prompted by the texts or where they are likely to have practical application.

The module considers various elements that characterise contemporary spoken French in terms of its phonetic, morphological, syntactic and semantic aspects, also taking into account sociolinguistic variation (French-speaking area).
Thematic focus for semester 2: “Le lexique français”
The module focuses on lexical morphology and semantics, with particular regard to contemporary trends in the French lexicon and the contrastive aspect of French/Italian. The analysis of the lexicon is contextualised through the reading of French press articles, songs and advertisements.
Relevant linguistic concepts, with particular attention to synonymy, polysemy and homonymy, will be discussed where prompted by the texts or where they are likely to have practical application.
