Syllabus

Course Objectives

To understand the historical, cultural, social and, therefore, literary context of XXth and XXIst century.

Students will acquire the knowledge necessary to read literary texts, also in Spanish. The course aims to provide the ability to analyse and interpret the texts dealt with and set them into context.

Course Prerequisites

Students must possess a basic knowledge of the Spanish language, acquired through attendance of the literacy course and the Spanish language AAL, allowing them to approach reading texts in the original language

Teaching Methods

Frontal lessons; projections of films. The course is held in Italian; the primary sources are in Spanish and the secondary ones in Spanish and Italian.

Assessment Methods

The exam at the end of the course will take place in written form, in Italian and the evaluation will beexpressed out of thirty. The exam will be structured in 6/7 open questions concerning the entire program in order to verify the acquisition by the students of what is taught during the course; one or two questions will deepen the historical, social and literary context, the others will delve into each of the works analyzed during the course and related bibliography. For all students what will be assessed is completeness of knowledge, correctness of exposition, critical capacity, ability to establish connections between the critical referencebibliography and primary sources. The final grade will be the mathematical average of the scores (out of thirty) of each individual answer.

The professor reserves the right to request a supplementary oral interview, even after the written exam has been taken, should this be deemed necessary to verify the actual acquisition of the knowledge and skills outlined in the course's learning objectives and to ensure an accurate evaluation.

Contents

The Spanish novel of the early Francoist period ("La familia de Pascual Duarte" by Camilo José Cela and "Nada" by Carmen Gaite); the novel (and graphic novel) for the recovery of historical memory from the beginning of the current century ("Soldados de Salamina" by Javier Cercas, "Cuerda de presas" by Jorge García and Fidel Martínez and "La voz dormida" by Dulce Chacón).

More information

In the bibliography published on Leganto, non-attending students are requested to review the mandatory texts for exam preparation. These materials are in addition to the core bibliography common to all students and substitute for in-person lectures.
