Abstract:
The article concentrates on “Hogart Shakespeare” ” (), the project launched to retell some of the Bard’s plays, adapting them to a twenty-first century audience of novel readers. Since 2015, acclaimed and bestselling novelists have worked on some of the most famous shakespearian plays, writing novels published in twenty countries and fourteen different languages. Specific attention is here given to Ann Tyler’s Vinegar Girl, the remake of the popular comedy The Taming of the Shrew. Is it a homage to one of the giants of Literature (in capital letter), a way to showcase Shakespeare’s cultural relevance or is it a brazen marketing strategy to reach out to millions of readers, supposedly enticed both by one of their favourite novelists and by a classic play? The analysis of the adaptation explores Tyler’s brilliant inventions to update characters and situations, but also examines what cannot survive of the complex metatheatrical features of the original and how many of its ambiguities have been sacrificed.
