Chiara Brambilla, PhD in Anthropology and Epistemology of Complexity, is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the Department of Human and Social Sciences, University of Bergamo (Italy). She has been Adjunct Professor of Cultural Anthropology at the IULM University of Milan.
Her research focuses on anthropology, critical geopolitics and epistemology of borders; border studies and border theory; migrations, transnationalism and (post)-globalization; border aesthetics; urban ethnography and borders in cities; landscapes, territories and identities; borders in Africa; colonialism and post-colonialism. She has carried out her field and archivist-bibliographic research both at international (Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Niger, Libya, Angola/Namibia, Tunisia; Europe: Berlin) and national (Province of Bergamo, Autonomous Province of Trento, Lampedusa, Mazara del Vallo - Sicily) level.
She has published in her research focus areas within Italian and international journals and volumes.
She is the Scientific Responsible of the Bergamo Unit of the PRIN Project 2022 “BorderArt(E)Scapes. Contemporary Art, Anthropology and Borderscapes: from the late nineteenth century to the 2000s, reading contemporaneity and experimenting with new research practices” (2023/2025).
She has been the scientific responsible, with G. Bocchi, for the research work of the Centre for Research on Complexity of the University of Bergamo within the EU FP7 project EUBORDERSCAPES (2012/2016) and participated in the transdisciplinary Research Project “Border Aesthetics” (2010/2013) under the Research Council of Norway KULVER programme, initiated by the Border Poetics Research Group, University of Tromsø, Norway.
She is Associate Member of the Nijmegen Centre for Border Research - NCBR, Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands.
She is regional editor for Europe of the Journal of Borderlands Studies.
